The little island Aghios Achillios, amidst the Prespa Lakes, has been for many years the centre of the “Prespeia” Festival, just before the end of summer. Prespa Lakes border Albania and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, in a magnificent landscape where the lakes meet the surrounding mountains.
Aghios Achillios is the second inhabited lake island in Greece. In the past, the island was accessed only by boat but recently a bridge connects the island to the lake shore. The human presence on the island is testified by a number of monuments dating from antiquity, while the most striking is the 10th century Byzantine Basilica of Aghios Achillios. The Basilica and the other monuments become part of the background of the festivities, which every year host the most prominent Greek artists, who participate in musical performances and plays.
